Ghana Launches Advanced Cocoa Traceability System to Ensure Sustainable Cocoa Production!

Ghana has taken a significant step towards sustainable cocoa production with the launch of its Cocoa Traceability System.

The new system, which was highlighted in a recent social media post by GIZ Ghana, was closely monitored by a delegation from the European Union in Ghana, the Swiss Embassy, the Dutch Embassy, GIZ Ghana, the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), and the World Cocoa Foundation. The delegation observed the entire traceability process, from the cocoa farms in Assin Fosu to the port in Takoradi.

At Assin Fosu, more than 40,000 farms have already been mapped, and over 20,000 farmers, 40% of whom are women, have been registered into the system. This groundbreaking system has already facilitated the purchase and shipment of over 1,230 bags of sustainable cocoa.

The Cocoa Traceability System is set to be fully operational nationwide by December 2024, a milestone that will enable Ghana to meet the stringent demands of the European market. This initiative is expected to be a gamechanger in managing deforestation, combating child labor in cocoa production, and promoting a living income for farmers across the country.

The project is a collaborative effort, supported by the European Union and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD).
