AduAmani, Adelle A’asante Awarded £5,000 British Council Grant for ‘Kookoo 360 Exhibition

Ghanaian circular fashion designer Vera Adu Amaning, popularly known as AduAmani, continues to make waves in the UK with her sustainable fashion ventures. She, alongside Artistic and Creative Director Adelle A’asante of Ese ne Tekyerema CIC, has been awarded a £5,000 grant under the British Council’s Architecture Design Fashion (ADF) programme. The grant, announced on September 1, 2024, will support their upcoming ‘Kookoo 360 Exhibition.’

The exhibition is scheduled for October 25, 2024, as part of the “Chocolate Has a Name Festival,” which will be held in Halifax during the Calderdale Year of Culture 2024. Themed around cocoa, the exhibition will feature fashion pieces made from cocoa jute sacks, materials commonly used for cocoa export.

This creative project aims to highlight the potential of waste materials in the fashion industry, showcasing items such as bags, shoes, clothing, and jewellery. AduAmani’s pieces, produced in Ghana, emphasize sustainability while telling the stories of cocoa farming communities. “Through design, we can rewrite the narrative. We are giving these materials new life,” says AduAmani.

Adelle A’asante added, “We are challenging the throwaway culture in fashion by reminding people that discarded materials can become symbols of resilience.”

The ‘Kookoo 360 Exhibition’ is expected to leave a lasting impact, promoting circular economies and sustainable fashion practices.
