Dr. Daniel McKorley, CEO/Chairman of McDan Group shares his experience and advised young people who want to start their own business
In a post sighted on his Linkedin page, he stated he has been inactive business for over 20 years and people think he is uniquely qualified to advise young people who want to start their own business. Dr. McKorley said maybe he is in the position to do so, but also still learning, and looking for ways to improve things, to build business models around our problems, and to change the way things are done in our country and continent.
He said if there is anything you can take away from his experience as an entrepreneur, it’s this: in entrepreneurship, instincts are everything. So trust your gut and learn how to listen to the internal voice that’s telling you something. But realistically, how do you do this?
1. Believe in that decision you’re about to take. Don’t do anything half-heartedly. Sometimes you have to make decisions you are not completely ready to make. Whatever that decision is, follow through on it with full confidence. And be ready to learn from the success or failure of it.
2. Avoid arrogance. In business, it’s possible to become blind to reality and make poor decisions because you think you always know what’s right. No one always knows what is right, and you will make mistakes. Always take a moment to evaluate your decision, even after what your instincts tell you.
3. Be OK with changing your beliefs. The more you learn on your journey of entrepreneurship, the more you realize you don’t know. Things you know today may change tomorrow because of new research. So, learn, adapt and evolve.
Dr. McKorley also stated in all of this, it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t seek help or outside guidance — you will always need those. But what you do is that you accept someone’s opinion, evaluate it, and then act on your instinct with it. This strengthens your business leadership so you can be a real leader who thinks clearly and acts confidently.
