Former Achimota Rastafarian Student Tyrone Secures $1.4 Million in U.S. Scholarships (University of Pennsylvania)

Achimota School, a prestigious senior high school in Ghana, has praised Tyrone Iras Marhguy, a former student and Rastafarian, for securing scholarships worth $1.4 million from top U.S. universities.

On Wednesday, August 28, 2024, the school, affectionately known as Motown, took to X (formerly Twitter) to extend its congratulations to Tyrone for this significant achievement.

“Achimota Excellence! Congratulations Akora @marhguy_tyrone on your latest achievement. Go forth as living waters to a thirsty land,” the school shared in its post, urging Tyrone to continue making waves on the global stage.

Tyrone, who was initially denied admission to Achimota School in 2021 for refusing to cut his dreadlocks, later won a landmark legal battle that allowed him to attend the school. His journey since then has been nothing short of remarkable.

After his victory, Tyrone represented Achimota School in the 2023 National Maths and Science Quiz and earned 8As in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). He also made headlines in December 2023 when he was named the overall national top scorer in the American Mathematics Olympiad, outshining over 150,000 students worldwide.

In a post on X on the same day, Tyrone announced that he has been awarded a full scholarship to study computer engineering at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn). He also received scholarship offers from Franklin & Marshall College, Williams College, and Duke University, all adding up to the impressive $1.4 million.
